Rhode Island’s oldest craft publishing company. Fiercely independent, bringing new works to light.
We create fond memories for readers and listeners of all ages and cultures…
Our vision is to create bestselling books and audio books that are passed down for generations to come.
Light Publications was founded by author and storyteller Mark Binder in the days when self-publishing was taboo. In addition to Mark’s works, we’ve published books by Tom Sgouros and John Speck. Back then, no major publication or award would look at a self-published manuscript. So we lied.
And began winning awards.
Light Publications has always been a leader. We published the first novel to be serialized via email, one of the first digital-designed books to address issues of race, and color, and the first audio book to be serialized on Spotify.
In the past several years, we’ve begun to abandon the pretense. We still encounter resistance from organizations who require gatekeepers to hold back the rising tide of literature and audio.
“Lately, I’ve realized that my work as a writer and storyteller is intertwined with my work as a craft publish,” Mark Binder said. “During the process of developing the hardcopy or digital edition, the story changes and new shapes begin to emerge. It’s akin to taking a script and making a movie, or moving from a sketch to an oil-based canvas.”
We’ve had mentions in The New York Times and reviews in Publishers Weekly, AudioFile, The Providence Journal, School Library Journal and many more. Nods include:
- Audie Audiobook Award Nomination for Best Original Work
- National Jewish Book Award for Family Literature Finalist
- Parents’ Choice Gold for Audio Storytelling
- Digital Book Award Finalist
- Digital Book World Quality Excellence Design Award
- Mom’s Choice Silver
- Ben Franklin Silver.
